It seems from where I stand that our culture is desiring community more than it has in the past couple of decades but there is a huge problem. We humans are great at falling prey to the temptation to sabatoge those dessires that are good for us while getting involved in those which destroy what we desire most. What I have experienced in my life is the desire to escape hurt. That desire drove me to stay away from church or when I did go, to not get envolved to the point I had to get close to people. The fact is we hurt people we shouldn't but we do. If we will stay together work together and grow together we will find we all hurt each other less and the world will know us by our love. The other problem that I see which may be even bigger is our american run run always going lifestyle. We go so much when sunday comes around we are beat. We do need a rest. The problem is not church the problem is we are addicted to busieness. God convicted me a few years ago about this. He seemed to say if you want to worship me why do you tire yourself out so much you can't stay awake in worship. If I were to train for a sports event I wouldn't aproach it as we do sunday morning worship. Our husbands and wives do need to spend time alone. Plan ahead do away with things in the shedule. Let's go against the culture and have time to truely be with people. Our job in this life is to do justly, love mercy and walk humbly with our God. That takes a person who has left the addiction to the busy life behind.

Hi Jim,
What a wonderful message you have written for all of us to be blessed.
I am so thankful for the body of Christ during our mountains and valleys. They come in all forms, but each of us have them.
I trust for the Love of God to surround you and your family in this New Year 2010. May you behold the glory of His Presence in your everyday living and be richly renewed in His Word. Sincerely, Donna

Hey Jim. Thanks for the advent devotions this month. Today's gives a hint of realness and authenticity. Here are some nuggets that your words provoked in me. Faithfulness when all seems futile. Worshiping when it doesn't make sence. Working without all the hype of being noticed. And to quote pastor Bob, watering our grass when it looks greener on the other side! :D Thanks brother for your encouragment.

An eternal perspective is all that makes temporal life possible some days, isn't it?

As I struggle with both the painful stuff in my own life that I can't make sense of and the burden of sin and non-sense that the greater world stumbles under each day, it helps me to remember that physical death is not the ultimate tragedy from God's perspective -- and we must all go through that door at sometime and in some way. Isaiah echos God's voice, "My thoughts are higher than your thoughts and my ways are higher than your ways."

I sit here trying to write out a graveside service for my wife. She took 8 years to die of a rare brain disease. She died on 21 Dec. My 3 children want the verse of Job 1/21 inscribed on a cross to remind them of the bitter sweet experience of the death of their believing mother. The words come easy. Most of the time we can mean them. We look forward to heaven.
